India to Participant in Galileo Satellite Navigation system
[May 31st 2005]
India is likely to get into
agreement in coming weeks alongwith Canada, Russia,
Argentina, South Korea and china to participant in
European Union (EU) and European Space Agency (ESA)
jointly ventured satellite based navigation and positioning
system.
India to participate
in Satellite Navigation and positioning system Galileo,
after 3 years of discussion. European Union and Euoropean
space agency hopes, India being sucessful and experienced
in the techology domain and being successful with
INSAT series, they could be a major contributor in
the project. India had committed their participatation
to galileo project in India-Europe summit in 2003.
Galileo is the Europes
second adveture in satellite navigation systems. Before
Galileo, EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation
Overlay service) was EU's first venture into the domain.
EGNOS is functional since 1993. Galileo is scheduled
to start service fully functional by 2008. It cosists
of 30 satellites with 3 spares in the medium earth
orbit (MEO). U.S. based NAVISTAR is another example
of MEO satellitle with 24 sattelites. Galileo's 30
satellitles will be orbiting in MEO at 23616KM above
the earth.
Galileos Developmemt
and deployment cost including construction and lauch
for all its 30 satellitles and setting up of the ground
based operations, have been evaluated upto 3.2 billion
EURO, a average development cost of 150 KM of semi
urban motorway in europe is around 3 billion Euro.
Galileo satellite system
aimed to meet requirements for global coverage will
have applications in the sectors mentioned below.
Transport Energy Road Telecom Civil Protection Rail
Finance, Insurance Time reference Aviation Civil Engineering
Science Public Transport Agriculture Leisure Maritime
Safety Environment Pilot projects
Along with European
Union (EU) and European Space Agency, European Investment
bankers,Private companies and third countries are
also partnering in this advance satellite navigation
system. China and ISreal has already signed the project,
china commited investment of 200 million euros for
the project. Some of the companies partnering the
Galileo projects are Arcadis (Netherlands), Autostrade
(Italy), Boeing (USA), CASC (China), Deimos (Spain),
Deutsche Bahn (Germany), DFS (Germany), DLR (Germany),
Elecnor (Spain), Ericsson (Sweden).
Presently there are
two major satellitle networks in the world one American
(GPS) and Russian (GLONASS) both essentially designed
for military use. Galileo is based on same technology
and probably higher degree of precision. EGNOS, EU's
first programme for satellite navigation was operational
based on GPS and GLONASS, Consisting of three geostationary
satellites and a network of ground stations, EGNOS
achieved its aim by transmitting a signal containing
information on the reliability and accuracy of the
positioning signals sent out by the Global Positioning
System (GPS) and the Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite
System (GLONASS). It allows users in Europe and beyond
to determine their position to within 5 m.
Galileo is important
for the future of Europe's technology Growth. It will
also reduce depedency and US technology Infrastructure
and provide critical advantage to technology for Europe
and its partners.
India looking forward
for strategic partnership in Galileo project will
significantly enhance its future growth in the domain
of satellite technologies.
