[November 28 to December 9, 2005.]
PALAIS DES CONGRÈS, Montréal, Canada
Stéphane Dion,
Minister of the Environment, Opens the Historic Conference
on Climate Change in Montréal.
The Understanding and Preparing for Change theme
will highlight the latest climate change research
and climate projections, and offer a global perspective
on climate change impacts and adaptation in key sectors.
Around 10,000 representatives from nearly 190 governments,
various environmental groups and businesses are attending
the United Nations climate conference in the Canadian
city of Montreal, where it is hoped that detailed
agreement will be reached on measures to effectively
reduce the production of so-called greenhouse gases,
held responsible for global warming.
The main outline for achieving this goal is laid
down in the Kyoto Protocol, which finally came into
effect at the beginning of the year, and saw 38 industrialised
nations commit themselves to reduce their emissions
of greenhouse gases to 5.2 percent below their levels
in 1990. The ultimate deadline for achieving the target
is 2012.
Event will cover the following topics:
(a) Science for Solutions
(b) Climate Change and Human Health
(c) Living with Climate Change - Sharing Adaptation
Experiences
(d) Development and Adaptation Days at CoP 11
(e) Arctic Day
